First, try disabling all your other ad-blocking or privacy extensions (e.g., Malwarebytes, DuckDuckGo, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, Norton AntiTrack, etc.). Use the steps below for the browser you are using to view your list of extensions: * In Chrome and Edge, enter **about:extensions** in the address bar. * In Safari, go to **Safari** \>**Preferences** \>**Extensions** (or look in the Launchpad for an ad-blocking app). * In Firefox, enter **about:addons** in the address bar. If you don't immediately see an extension that could be causing the problem, try toggling ++**all**++ of your extensions to Off, reloading the page, and seeing if the anti-adblock notification still appears. If it doesn't appear, turn one extension back on and reload the page. Repeat until you identify the extension causing the notification. ## If it's not another extension, check the following: * In some cases, cybersecurity or VPN software can trigger a site to display the notices as well. Acceptable Ads are ads that [++aren't considered annoying or intrusive++](https://eyeo.atlassian.net/hc/en-us/articles/9738480686483-About-the-Acceptable-Ads-program-and-non-intrusive-ads). They don't prevent you from reading or interacting with website content, and it's clear that they're advertisements. Acceptable Ads without third-party tracking are ads that are in line with Acceptable Ads standards and do **not** allow third-party tracking of any kind on your browser. While the browser's warning sounds alarming it's important to know that **AdBlock does not track your browsing, collect your personal information, or alter anything you submit online.** ### **Longer version** When you first install AdBlock, your browser may show a warning like: *"AdBlock can read, modify, and transmit content from all web pages. This could include sensitive information like passwords, phone numbers, and credit cards."* The exact wording varies by browser, but it's designed to sound serious---because you should always be aware of what extensions are allowed to do. Here's what those permissions really mean in the case of AdBlock: * **Access every page you visit** AdBlock needs to see the pages you open so it can block or hide ads everywhere. This means AdBlock knows the URLs of the sites you visit. * **Read page content** AdBlock checks the content of each page to detect ads that weren't blocked before loading. Technically, this means it *could* see things like forms or activity on that tab---but AdBlock does **not** collect or store that information. * **Modify page content** To hide ads, AdBlock adds small snippets of HTML, CSS, or JavaScript to the page. This only changes how the page looks---it doesn't change the content you submit. * **"Webpage Contents" permission** This permission allows AdBlock (and all ad blockers) to hide ads that can't be blocked at the request level by altering the page's code. * **Other changes (allowlisting, ad detection, and more)** AdBlock modifies page code to show the "allowlist" option when you request it, and also uses this access for snippets and anti-circumvention filter lists that help catch ads that would otherwise slip through. **Important:** AdBlock never records your browsing history, captures what you type in forms (like passwords or credit cards), or alters any data you submit. ## **Do you collect any information?** We do collect some information to make AdBlock a better ad-blocking extension, and it's important to us to keep that to a minimum. You can review this data before sharing it. In AdBlock's options, go to the Support tab and click "Download debug data" --- it downloads as a text file and you can remove anything you'd prefer not to share before you send it to us. Blocking the cookie consent notification means the pop-up will be hidden. We'll reject any cookies we can on your behalf (third-party trackers) and only accept those that are required to access the website (first-party trackers). You can change this at any time by deselecting the Cookie Consent Cutter option on the Premium Filters tab in AdBlock's Options. ## How to enable the Cookie Consent Cutter feature For Chrome, Firefox and Edge desktop extensions: 1. Custom Image Swap is a feature of [AdBlock Premium](https://helpcenter.getadblock.com/adblock-help-center/all-about-adblock-premium). When Custom Image Swap is enabled, AdBlock will replace some of the ads it blocks with images from your collection. We will replace no more than two ads per page. We will continue to block all other ads as we do normally. We will only add images to a page when we find the perfect fit, so you may not see images on every page you visit. **You must pause or disable any other ad blockers while using Image Swap.** ## Which file types can I use? |---|-----------------------------------------------------| | Currently, Custom Image Swap supports the following image files: || | | \*.bmp \*.gif \*.jpeg \*.png \*.svg \*.tiff \*.webp | ## How are my images stored? You may store up to 9 images to be used in Custom Image Swap. All of your image files are stored locally and do do not reach our servers. This means we don't keep or store copies of your images anywhere on our servers, so no one but you (or someone with access to your computer) can access the images you've stored in Custom Image Swap. ## How can I change my Image Swap settings in AdBlock Premium? 1. Click the **AdBlock** icon in your browser toolbar. 2. Click the **gear** icon. 3. On the Options page that opens, select **Image Swap**. 4. Your selections are saved automatically. Just close the options page when you're done. ## What if I don't see any images? AdBlock will use two images per page, and will only swap ads when the following conditions are true: 👉 The site's code provides the size of an ad so AdBlock can detect its size. 👉 The ad is at least 60 pixels wide by 60 pixels tall. 👉 One of your images matches the size of the ad. You can view the size and shape of the ads on the site by [pausing AdBlock](http://helpcenter.getadblock.com/adblock-help-center/pausing-and-unpausing-adblock) and reloading the page. If you are using more than one of our Image Swap collections simultaneously (for example cats and landscapes), you'll see your custom images less frequently. ## What are the icons that appear when I move my cursor over an image? There you can download it or search Google for similar images. 👉 Clicking the **gear icon**opens the AdBlock options page. 👉 Clicking the **X**icon removes the picture from the page if, for instance, you don't like the image content or where the picture is placed. **Note** , clicking the **X** icon does not remove the picture from the collection or prevent that ad from being replaced in the future. --- language: "en" --- # About Distraction Control ## What is it? Distraction Control is one of our most popular [AdBlock Premium](https://helpcenter.getadblock.com/adblock-help-center/all-about-adblock-premium) features. With Distraction Control, you can prevent annoying pop-up newsletter requests, floating videos, survey requests, and "allow" notifications from appearing. **Note:** AdBlock Premium is only available on desktop browsers for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. It's not available on the AdBlock for Safari Mac app or mobile devices. ## How do I turn it on? To enable Distraction Control, use these steps: 1. Click on the **AdBlock toolbar icon** . With AdBlock's default settings enabled, you will see occasional non-intrusive ads. That's because AdBlock participates in the [Acceptable Ads program](https://acceptableads.com/about/). The Acceptable Ads program defines strict [guidelines to identify non-intrusive ads](https://acceptableads.com/en/about/criteria), which AdBlock shows by default. You can opt out of this setting at any time. ## Why should I agree to see Acceptable Ads? Allowing Acceptable Ads to display lets site owners know you understand that ads let them provide free content. It tells them that you will accept a few small, non-intrusive ads, but you will not tolerate large, distracting, or invasive ads that keep you from focusing on the content you've come to enjoy. Showing Acceptable Ads also helps prevent sites from using all-or-nothing ultimatums, such as anti-adblocking warnings, that force you to disable your ad blocker to access their sites. It tells site owners, ad blockers, and advertisers you support an internet that's fair for everyone. ## Did AdBlock start the Acceptable Ads program? No, eyeo GmbH created the Acceptable Ads program. In 2017, eyeo [moved control of the Acceptable Ads program to a third-party review board](https://acceptableads.com/committee/). In 2021, [AdBlock joined Adblock Plus](https://blog.getadblock.com/teaming-up-to-make-more-magic-5ffa41416dcf) (owned by eyeo GmbH). ## Can I turn Acceptable Ads off? Yes. We believe users should control what they see on the web. That, after all, is what AdBlock is all about. You can easily opt out of the Acceptable Ads program using the steps below. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge 1. Click on the **AdBlock**icon on your browser toolbar. 2. Click on the **gear** icon on the pop-up menu. 3. Click on the **Filter lists** tab. 4. Deselect the **Acceptable Ads** option. 5. Reload the page where you were seeing ads. Safari (Mac) 1. Open the **AdBlock for Safari** Mac app. 2. On the AdBlock window click on the **Ad blocking** tab. 3. Under "Change what AdBlock hides and shows" click on **Manage**. 4. Toggle the option**Allow some non-intrusive ads**off. 5. Reload the page where you were seeing ads. Safari (iOS) 1. Open the **AdBlock for Mobile** app. 2. Tap **Settings**. 3. On the Settings screen, toggle the option **Allow some non-intrusive ads**to OFF. 4. Reload the page where you were seeing ads. Samsung Browser (Android) 1. Open the **AdBlock for Samsung Browser** app. 2. Deselect the option **Allow some non-intrusive ads**. 3. If your visitors are reporting that images are missing, pages look strange, forms don't work, etc., most often a resource on your site has a name that makes it look like an ad to the filter lists. If visitors can't reach your site at all because AdBlock warns that it hosts malware, your site may have been blocklisted by a malware filter list. ## How do I fix it? ### 1. Check For Blocked Resources The first thing to look for is a file or directory name that's triggering a filter list to block it. Rename the resource if possible The best solution is to change the name to something the filter lists won't recognize as an ad. ### 3. Ask the list authors for an exception If you can't change the name (for instance, if the text string "ad" is part of your domain name), you'll need to ask the list authors to add an exception for it. Here's how to determine which filter list is blocking the resource: 1. Note which filter lists are enabled on the FILTER LISTS tab in AdBlock's options, then disable them. 2. Reload the page that's not working. It should work now. If it doesn't, skip to "A filter list isn't blocking the resource," below. 3. Re-enable the first filter list you disabled and wait for AdBlock to fetch it. 4. Test the page again. 5. Keep doing that until you find the list that makes the problem come back. ### 4. The list authors may have a formal complaint process, or it may be just an emailed request for help. If the list authors use a forum for issue tracking, be sure to read any pinned posts, especially those that begin "Before you post a problem in this forum." Here are some guidelines for reporting your issue in the EasyList forums. 1. Click the **New Topic** button in the appropriate forum 2. Name your topic for your site Note: If the site contains adult content, please include "NSFW" ("not safe for work") in the topic subject 3. Be sure to include your browser and version, and which ad blockers you have tested 4. Provide a link to the page that isn't working 5. We would love to help, and we understand your frustration when we can't. When you add a site to your allowlist, you are telling AdBlock to allow ads on that site every time you visit. Historically, AdBlock would retain that site on your allowlist until you removed it. Now, AdBlock uses smart allowlisting, which keeps the site on your allowlist for seven days. If you visit the site again in those seven days, AdBlock will extend the allowlist for another seven days. If you don't visit the site within those seven days, the site will be removed from your allowlist, and ads will be blocked again. ## Where can I view my allowlist? 1. This is helpful when you want to browse without blocking for a short time. To pause: 1. Open the **AdBlock** app. 2. Click **Pause Ad Blocking**. 3. However, you may want to disable AdBlock as a **temporary troubleshooting step** if pausing AdBlock doesn't help. To disable AdBlock completely, go to **Safari** \>**Settings** \> **Extensions** and uncheck **AdBlock** . On some web pages, however, you may see them as blank areas because we weren't able to reformat the page to use that space. Go to [http://YouTube.com](http://youtube.com/) and click the **AdBlock** icon on your browser's toolbar. 2. Click **Pause on this site**. This will allow ads on YouTube for 7 days. If at any time you want to block ads again, use the same steps: 1. Go to [http://YouTube.com](http://youtube.com/) and click the **AdBlock** icon on your browser's toolbar. 2. Click **Resume Ad Blocking**. ## Allow Ads On Specific YouTube Channels (Older versions before 6.28.0) To allow ads on specific YouTube channels, follow these steps: 1. Click the **AdBlock**icon on the browser toolbar. 2. Click the **gear**icon to open the Options page. 3. On the **General** tab, select **Allow ads on specific YouTube channels** . ([Not seeing this](https://eyeo.atlassian.net/hc/en-us/articles/9738523971347)?) 4. Restart your browser or refresh the current page. 5. Visit a video in the YouTube channel you want to allowlist. 6. If you change your mind, you can remove a YouTube channel at any time. Just visit the channel page, click the AdBlock icon on the browser toolbar, and select **Enable AdBlock on this page**. ## Allow Ads On Subscribed YouTube Channels (Older versions before 6.28.0) First, make sure you've already enabled YouTube channel allowlisting by following the steps listed above. Next, toggle the switch labeled "Manage AdBlock settings from my YouTube subscriptions page" to **on**(it will turn blue). The switch is just below the option to "Allow ads on specific YouTube channels." Now you can add and remove channels from your AdBlock allowlist right from your [YouTube subscriptions page](https://www.youtube.com/feed/channels). From this page, click the AdBlock Assistant icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and select "Allow Ads On All" to allow ads on all of your subscribed channels. If you change your mind, you can resume normal ad blocking by selecting "Block Ads On All," or you can remove channels individually from the YouTube subscriptions page or by clicking "Block ads on this channel" from any video posted by the channel you'd like to remove. --- language: "en" --- # Can I use AdBlock to block an entire website? Not really. For this, it's much easier to use an extension that's built for that purpose. We see this used most often on free video and audio streaming sites and news sites. If that fixes the problem, the culprit is most likely an overzealous filter list blocking something it shouldn't. Go ahead and do what you need to do while AdBlock is paused, and remember to unpause when you're done. There may be a brief delay when you first open your browser while it fetches your [AdBlock filter lists](https://blog.getadblock.com/dear-adblock-what-are-adblock-filter-lists-ba732817d67c). After that, pages generally load much faster because you're not downloading ads. If you're noticing a serious lag when you start up your browser, there are a couple of things you can do. First, don't subscribe to more filter lists than [you need](https://helpcenter.getadblock.com/adblock-help-center/introduction-to-filter-lists) (doing so **can**slow down your browser). Second, avoid having a large number of tabs open automatically every time you launch your browser. If you do, then after AdBlock downloads all those filter rules, it immediately begins applying them to your open tabs to block any ads they may contain. AdBlock **will not** affect your computer's overall performance. It's a browser extension - a little piece of JavaScript code that extends your browser features. It doesn't affect anything outside of the browser. --- language: "en" --- # Concerns about AdBlock and malware The official [browser extension](https://blog.getadblock.com/dear-adblock-what-is-a-chrome-extension-822e91454848) stores and our website, [https://getadblock.com](https://getadblock.com/), are the only safe places to get AdBlock. If you installed AdBlock (or an extension with a similar name to AdBlock) from anywhere else, it may contain [adware](https://blog.getadblock.com/what-is-adware-ce135d866898) or malware that can infect your computer. AdBlock is open source software, which means that anyone can take our code and use it for their own, sometimes nefarious, purposes. And unfortunately, there have been issues with fake ad blockers imitating popular ad blockers to spread malware. If you believe you may have downloaded a fake version of AdBlock, here's what we recommend: 1. Uninstall the extension(s). 2. Exit your browser. 3. Open your browser (if you sync your browser settings across computers, be sure you're signed in to your synced profile). 4. Confirm that sync no longer installs the extension automatically. 5. [Remove malware](https://helpcenter.getadblock.com/adblock-help-center/how-to-remove-malware-or-adware-from-your-device) from your computer, if needed. 6. Yes, updating this setting also prevents our update page from appearing when we update the extension. Yes, you can use AdBlock to [block ads on Twitch](https://getadblock.com/block-twitch-ads-with-adblock/) and similar video streaming sites. There are some things to keep in mind as you use AdBlock on Twitch: **Blocking the Twitch ad means hiding it.** Because Twitch ads are inserted into the video stream, we can't use our typical methods to block them. Instead, we must [hide and mute ads on Twitch](https://blog.getadblock.com/how-to-block-ads-on-twitch-173e9678c703). This means that during an ad, the video player will show a blank, muted screen (see screenshot below). Since Twitch ads are inserted directly into the video stream, ad blockers must "race" to block ads on Twitch streams before the site can download them. This means that while AdBlock can block Twitch ads, we may not be able to catch every single ad before you see it. If you see occasional unblocked ads on Twitch while using AdBlock, a simple page refresh should eliminate them. ## Experiencing other issues on Twitch? Although we have tested the code we use to block ads on Twitch as thoroughly as possible, you may encounter an edge case that we couldn't anticipate. While we do expect the occasional Twitch ad to get through, you shouldn't be bombarded with Twitch ads, and your Twitch player should work without any major issues. Please include [AdBlock's debug information](https://helpcenter.getadblock.com/adblock-help-center/send-your-debug-data) to help us troubleshoot. ## Alternatives If you want an additional tool to block Twitch ads, you might consider the following alternatives. ### Twitch 5 player The extension previously known as Twitch 5 (which has been renamed to Alternate Player for [http://Twitch.tv](http://twitch.tv/) ) reportedly strips most ads from live streams. * Get it for Chrome: [Alternate Player for Twitch.tv](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/alternate-player-for-twit/bhplkbgoehhhddaoolmakpocnenplmhf) * Get it for Firefox and browsers derived from Firefox: [Alternate Player for Twitch.tv](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/twitch_5/) * Get it for Microsoft Edge: [Alternate Player for Twitch.tv](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/alternate-player-for-twitchtv/9p9p2nd0s56c) ### Twitch Turbo Twitch offers a subscription service called [Twitch Turbo](https://www.twitch.tv/turbo), which comes with ad-free Twitch viewing as well as a few other perks. [Blocking the ads was then impossible](https://forums.lanik.us/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=32961&p=108816#p108816) without also blocking the video. For a while, it was possible to watch Twitch video ad-free by connecting your Twitch account to an Amazon Prime account, creating a "Twitch Prime" account. However, in late August 2018, Twitch Prime users learned they would no longer be exempt from ads after their current subscription ends, according to [this article in TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2018/08/20/twitch-prime-ditches-ad-free-viewing-as-one-of-its-perks/). In its [blog post](https://blog.twitch.tv/changes-to-twitch-prime-a986f0d8c9a9) explaining the change, Twitch said: *"Twitch Prime members with monthly subscriptions will continue to get ad-free viewing until October 15. In Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, the icon badge only shows blocked resources, not hidden ones. Why do we make this distinction? We try to balance information against performance. Counting hidden resources can take a lot of your computer's resources, slowing down your browsing. In Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, you can [see what AdBlock is hiding](https://eyeo.atlassian.net/hc/en-us/articles/9738523641875-How-can-I-see-what-AdBlock-is-blocking-hiding-and-allowlisting-) and which filter list is hiding it. ## Restoring the total number of blocked ads after reinstalling AdBlock We store the total number of blocked ads in your browser's persistent storage. Persistent storage is deleted entirely when you uninstall an extension. However, if you remember the total number (or can approximate it), you can use these steps to set AdBlock's counter to start at that number instead of zero after a reinstall. Chrome 1. Open the Chrome Extensions page (**Three dots \> More Tools \> Extensions** or open a new tab and enter **chrome://extensions**). 2. Enable Developer Mode in the upper right corner of the page. 3. Find AdBlock in the list of extensions. 4. To the right of "Inspect views," click the **background page**. The Chrome Developer Tools window opens. 5. Select the **Console** tab. 6. The [filter lists](https://eyeo.atlassian.net/hc/en-us/articles/9738523403027) you are subscribed to are updated automatically on a schedule set by the list authors. AdBlock will try to fetch the updated files as long as your browser is open and AdBlock is enabled and running. The AdBlock extension will also try to fetch updates when you open your browser. If a web page suddenly isn't working or looks wrong, it might be caused by a broken filter in a recent list update. If you're seeing ads, your filter lists might be outdated. In either case, making sure you have the most recent filter lists is a good first step in troubleshooting. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge **Update all filter lists:** 1. Click the **AdBlock** icon on your browser's toolbar. On the Filter Lists tab, at the bottom of the page, click Show links to the filter lists. 3. Click the link next to the filter list that is not updating. Safari (Mac) The content blockers update automatically in the AdBlock for Safari Mac app. Try quitting the app (**AdBlock \> Quit AdBlock** ) and Safari (**Safari \> Quit Safari**) which will force an update. While the app itself doesn't need to be open to block ads, it does need to be opened to check for updates. The window can be minimized, but the app must be running in the background for it to update your filter lists automatically. Safari (iPhone/iPad) 1. Open AdBlock and tap **Update Filter Lists**. 2. Optional: Restart your device. Because of a limitation in Safari on iOS, filter lists only update automatically if you open the AdBlock app. Since AdBlock doesn't need to be open to block ads, most people won't open the app at all. That means your filter lists may go months without being updated. This isn't an issue as long as ads are continuing to be blocked. If you notice that ads are starting to appear when you browse in Safari, it's time to open the app and manually update your filter lists. Samsung Browser (Android) 1. Open the AdBlock app and tap **Update ad-filter lists**. 2. Tap **Update now**. 3. Give the filter lists a moment to update. 4. AdBlock, like all ad blockers, relies on filter rules to know what to block, hide, and (in the case of allowlisted sites) allow to appear on the web pages you visit. AdBlock compares every [HTTP](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertext_Transfer_Protocol) (web page) request to the filter lists you're subscribed to and any custom filters you have added. If the [URL](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_Resource_Locator) (web address) of the request matches one of the filters, the request is blocked, and the resource is not downloaded. A common method of displaying ads is to encode an image using `data:image/png;`. This method doesn't trigger a normal HTTP request. That means ads called in this way can't be blocked. Instead, AdBlock injects a stylesheet onto every web page. The stylesheet contains selectors set to `display: none !important`, which hides the ads on the page. ## Where do the blocking and hiding filters come from? ### Filter lists Filters are rules to determine what should be blocked and hidden on web pages you visit. These rules are provided in collections called filter lists. 1. **EasyList:** Most of the filter rules come from [EasyList](https://easylist.to/), which is a huge collection of known ads on English-language websites all over the Web. EasyList is the primary ad-blocking filter list used by all ad blockers. 2. **Filter lists blocking other distractions:** You can also subscribe to [additional filter lists](https://eyeo.atlassian.net/hc/en-us/articles/9738523403027) that block things other than ads, such as certain annoying aspects of Facebook, social media buttons, and in-page pop-ups, and ads on sites in languages other than English. 3. **Acceptable Ads:** Additionally, there's the [Acceptable Ads](https://helpcenter.getadblock.com/adblock-help-center/about-the-acceptable-ads-program-and-non-intrusive-ads) filter list, which supports websites by allowing some non-intrusive advertising to appear. For instance, sites that let you watch videos or play games for free or download free software are notorious sources of malware. ## Watch Out for Suspicious Emails Phishing emails, emails sent from unknown sources or pretending to appear to come from a known source, are a common tactic used to infect your computer with adware. If an email looks suspicious or is from an unknown source, don't click on embedded links or open any attached files. ## Enable AdBlock Filter Lists AdBlock's desktop extensions (for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge) include a filter list called EasyPrivacy for an added layer of security. You can find reviews and recommendations for good antivirus programs using your favorite search engine. Knowing how to clear cache, cookies, and browsing history is an important part of maintaining your [internet privacy](https://blog.getadblock.com/introduction-to-data-privacy-how-to-limit-ad-tracking-and-protect-yourself-online-51091934756e). It can also help keep your ad blocker working as intended. Why do we suggest clearing your browser cache and cookies, resetting your browser settings, or updating your browser when you're seeing unblocked ads? * Your browser cache may retain information from a previous visit to a website with ads. If you delete the cache, they can no longer load. * A website may have created cookies on your computer that interfere with ad blocking. * Malware can change your browser settings to keep your ad blocker from working. * Browsers sometimes have bugs that make it difficult to block ads properly. Updating your browser ensures it has any recent bug fixes. ## How to clear your browser cache and cookies Chrome 1. Click the 3 vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner of your browser. 2. Select **Delete Browsing Data**. 3. Select **Cookies and other browser data**. 4. Click **Delete data**. Firefox 1. Safari (Mac) [This helpful article from OSXDaily.com](http://osxdaily.com/2016/01/17/empty-cache-safari-mac-os-x/) includes where to find and how to clear the web caches for different versions of MacOS and a few additional tips for troubleshooting Safari. ## Reset your browser settings Do this only if clearing your cache and cookies doesn't fix the issue. **Warning:** Be sure to back up your saved passwords and bookmarks first! If you're not sure how, search for "backup saved passwords and bookmarks \[your browser name\]" in your favorite search engine, replacing "\[your browser name\]" with your browser as appropriate. Chrome 1. Click the 3 vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner of your browser. 2. From the Chrome menu, click **Show advanced settings.** 3. Under **Reset** , click **Reset** , and then click **Reset** again to confirm. Firefox 1. Click the 3 horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of your browser. 2. Click **Help** and select **Troubleshooting Information** (you may also enter **about:support** in the address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page). 3. Click **Refresh Firefox** at the top right corner of the page. 4. Firefox will close. After the refresh process completes, click **Finish** in the window that opens. Go to **Safari** \> **Preferences** \>**Advanced**. 2. Select the option **Show Develop menu in menu bar**. 3. Go to **Develop** \>**Empty Caches**. ## Update your browser Chrome 1. Click the 3 vertical dots in the upper right-hand corner of your browser 2. Click **Update Google Chrome**. If you don't see this, you're already on the latest version 3. Click **Relaunch** Firefox 1. Click the 3 horizontal lines in the upper right-hand corner of your browser 2. Click**Help** , and then select **About Firefox**. If an update is available, it will download automatically. 3. When the update is ready, click **Restart Firefox to Update** Edge Edge is built into Microsoft Windows. To update Edge, update Windows: 1. Click the **Windows button** , then click the **gear**icon (Settings). 2. Click **Update and Security**. 3. In the left side menu, click **Windows Update**. 4. If an update is available, click **Install now**. Safari (Mac) To get the latest version of Safari, simply [install the latest macOS](https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201475). To keep Safari up to date for an earlier macOS, [install the latest updates for that macOS](https://support.apple.com/kb/HT201541). --- language: "en" --- # How to create your own personal filter list ## Why is a personal filter list helpful? Suppose you've created dozens, even hundreds, of custom filters in your journeys across the Web. Your filters won't sync to your other AdBlock extensions. Even worse, if your custom filters are accidentally deleted or lost in a hard drive crash, they could be gone forever. If you use the AdBlock desktop extension on Chrome, Firefox, or Edge, you can turn [all those custom filters](https://eyeo.atlassian.net/hc/en-us/articles/9738501334035-How-to-use-custom-filters) into a filter list that you subscribe to, just like EasyList or any other "official" list. It's downloaded every time you launch your browser on any computer. ## How to set up your personal filter list ### Step 1: Get your custom filters into a text file 1. Open any text editor and create a new file. 2. Paste the following text at the beginning of the file. Copy the lines exactly as they appear here, and don't forget the exclamation point in the last line. **\[Adblock Plus 2.0\]** **! Version:** **! Title:** **! Last modified:** **! Expires: 4 days (update frequency)** **! Homepage:** **!** 3. Copy your custom filters and paste them after that last exclamation point. 4. Save your file. Be sure it's in text-only format, and the name ends in ".txt" (for instance, "myfilters.txt"). 5. Upload the file to your [Dropbox](https://www.dropbox.com/help/desktop-web/add-files), [Google Drive](https://support.google.com/drive/answer/2424368), or [OneDrive](https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Upload-photos-and-files-to-OneDrive-b00ad3fe-6643-4b16-9212-de00ef02b586). ### Step 2: Get the direct download link First, get the public "anyone with the link can view" share link to your file. Then convert the public share link to a direct download link. Why do you need this step? The share link you get in Step 1 is a "preview" link that opens. It is not the file itself, but a preview of the file. It's pretty easy to convert that preview link into a link that downloads the file directly. The procedure you'll use depends on where you stored the file. Dropbox We found these instructions in a [Zapier tutorial](https://zapier.com/learn/how-to/generate-direct-dropbox-link/). 1. Point at the file in the Dropbox file listing and click the **Share** button that appears. 2. If you don't see "**Anyone** with the link can **view** this file," click **Link settings** and select **Anyone with the link** next to "Who can view this link?" 3. Click **Copy link**. 4. Open any text editor and paste the link. 5. Replace "[http://www.dropbox.com](http://www.dropbox.com/) " in the URL with "[dl.dropboxusercontent.com](http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/)." 6. Right-click the file in the Drive file listing and select **Get shareable link**. 2. If link sharing is off, click the toggle switch to turn link sharing on. 3. If you don't see "Anyone with the link **can view** ," click **Sharing settings** , and then click the little down-pointing arrow to open the "who can access this file" list. Click **More** to see additional people you can give access to. Select **On - Anyone with the link** . Click **Save** , and then click **Done**. 4. Click the share link to select it, and then press Ctrl+C to copy it to the clipboard. 5. Open any text editor and paste the link. 6. Replace " " with "[https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download\&id=FILE_ID](https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=FILE_ID)" where "FILE_ID" is the string that identifies the file. 7. Copy the new URL to the clipboard. ### Example Here's what that looks like. The **boldface**text is the file ID. Click the **AdBlock toolbar icon** and click on the **gear symbol**. 2. Select the **Filter Lists** tab. 3. Under **Custom Filter Lists** , paste the direct download link in the space provided and click **Subscribe**. ## Troubleshooting If you see anything other than "Updated right now" after you've subscribed to your filter list, here are some things to check. * Be sure your file is plain text, with no formatting codes. * Be sure the file name ends in ".txt" (for example, myfile.txt). * Be sure the file follows the proper format for a filter list. See the example below. * Be sure to use the *public* share link, not one that only you or any particular person can view. * If your file is stored on Dropbox or Google Drive, be sure the edited URL is correct. See the examples in the appropriate section above. What your filter list should look like: [Adblock Plus 2.0] ! Version: ! Title: My Personal Filter List ! Last modified: ! Expires: 7 days (update frequency) ! Homepage: ! ||taboola.com^ (all the rest of your custom filters) You don't need to provide values for Version, Title, Last modified, Expires, or Homepage. You only need the keywords to be present in the file. --- language: "en" --- # How to install AdBlock in Chrome when you can't do it the normal way If you run into errors when you're trying to install AdBlock from the Chrome Web Store, you can try "sideloading" it instead. Sideloadedextensions won't receive automatic updates. ## How to sideload AdBlock for Chrome 1. Visit . 2. Download the zip file for the most recent release of AdBlock and extract it to a location you can find easily. 3. Type **chrome://extensions** in the address bar to open Chrome's Extensions page. 4. Enable **Developer mode** in the upper right corner of the page. 5. Click **Load unpacked extension**, browse to the location where you downloaded the file, and select the extracted folder. 6. Safari (iPhone/iPad) In the AdBlock for Mobile app, go to **Settings**and make sure the "Allow some non-intrusive ads" option is toggled OFF.
