Allowlisting in AdBlock

The following information applies to AdBlock desktop extensions on Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.


What is allowlisting?

When you add a site to your allowlist, you are telling AdBlock to allow ads on that site every time you visit. Historically, AdBlock would retain that site on your allowlist until you removed it. Now, AdBlock uses smart allowlisting, which keeps the site on your allowlist for seven days. If you visit the site again in those seven days, AdBlock will extend the allowlist for another seven days. If you don't visit the site within those seven days, the site will be removed from your allowlist, and ads will be blocked again.

 

Where can I view my allowlist?

  1. Click the AdBlock icon on your browser's toolbar. If you don't see it, be sure to pin it.

  2. Click the gear icon.

  3. Click on the Customize tab.

Under Manually edit your filters, you'll see a box listing any filter rules you've created and sites you've allowlisted. In the example below, http://nytimes.com has been allowlisted:

Add or remove a site on your allowlist

There are two ways to add or remove a site: 

Via the AdBlock menu (Easy)

To add a site:

  1. Click the AdBlock icon on your browser's toolbar.

  2. Click the More icon (three dots).

  3. Click More pause options.

  4. Adjust the site or page slider to match the URL of the domain, set of pages, or specific page you want to add to your allowlist, then click Exclude.

The page will refresh and ads will display. 

Once excluded, the filter rule will automatically appear in your list of custom rules on the Customize tab in AdBlock's Options.

This option allows you to see ads on a specific page, set of pages, or site but will block ads everywhere else (including on pages on the same site).


To remove a site:

  1. Visit the page or site you want to remove.

  2. Click the AdBlock icon on your browser's toolbar. If you don't see it, be sure to pin it.

  3. Click Resume Ad Blocking.

The page will refresh and ads will be blocked again. The site will no longer appear in your list of filter rules on the Customize tab in AdBlock's Options.

Manually add or remove a site (Advanced)

To add a site:

  1. Create an exception rule: How to write filters

  2. Click the AdBlock icon on your browser's toolbar. If you don't see it, be sure to pin it.

  3. Click the gear icon.

  4. On the Customize tab, click Edit.

  5. Paste your exception rule in the box. 

  6. Click Save.

  7. To ensure your changes are reflected, reload the website where you want to see ads.

 

To remove a site:

  1. Click the AdBlock icon on your browser's toolbar.

  2. Click the gear icon.

  3. On the Customize tab, click Edit.

  4. Look for any lines in the box that contain the name of the website and delete them.

  5. Click Save.

  6. To ensure your changes are reflected, reload the website where you no longer want to see ads.

There are several other ways to tell AdBlock where it’s okay to show you ads.
